The Open Innovation Model

Working with universities, research centres, innovation hubs and start-ups, the Group is involved in numerous projects. Iren is very active in European, national and regional co-funded research projects: these projects allow innovative solutions to be tested with the contribution and comparison of international realities.

CalBy2030

CaLby2030 focuses on demonstrating CO₂ capture systems based on Calcium Looping (CaL) with circulating fluidized bed (CFB) technology at TRL6, starting from three pilot plants in Europe operating under conditions relevant to industrial applications. The project aims to scale this technology towards commercial implementation in major high-emission sectors by 2030 (target sectors: steel, cement, and Waste-to-Energy). Specifically, IREN's contribution to the project will involve supporting the definition of testing protocols to be implemented at the foreign demonstration plants and identifying an existing or new Waste-to-Energy facility for a pre-engineering and integration study of a CFB-CaL system, with the development of an initial retrofit concept.

Woodcircles

The objective of the Woodcircles project is to study and demonstrate solutions that enable the recycling and reuse of wood waste from construction and demolition activities. Iren's role in the project (participating through Iren Ambiente as a third party) is part of the Italian pilot involving the City of Turin and Environment Park. In specific public building demolition sites, a dedicated collection and separation of wood material will be organized (at a pilot level), which will then be sent to the pallet recycling plant in Vercelli. There, the treatment of this type of waste will be tested with the goal of creating simple urban furniture elements.
